Adam Smith Institute

The Adam Smith Institute is the UK's leading innovator of free-market policies. Named after the great Scottish economist and author of The Wealth of Nations, its guiding principles are free markets and a free society. It researches practical ways to inject choice and competition into public services, extend personal freedom, reduce taxes, prune back regulation, and cut government waste.

The Institute is politically independent and non-profit. It works through research on policy options, publications, conferences and seminars, and helping to shape public debate in the media and among opinion-formers.

The International Adam Smith Society

www.adamsmithsociety.net

The International Adam Smith Society was founded in 1995 with two aims: (i) to encourage interdisciplinary scholarly interest in Adam Smith's writings, as well as in topics and issues connected with his writings; and (ii) to provide a forum for the sharing of research and scholarship relating to Adam Smith.

The Society's activities include sponsoring conference sessions in association with other learned societies and promoting communication amongst Smith scholars by providing a regular newsletter for its members.

In June 2001 the society held its first international conference in conjunction with the meeting of The Eighteenth-Century Scottish Studies Society and special sessions have regularly been held at the American Philosophical Association meetings.

The society is currently setting up a scholarly, peer-reviewed annual review, the Adam Smith Review.

"All men, even the most stupid and unthinking, abhor fraud, perfidy, and injustice, and delight to see them punished.  But few men have reflected upon the necessity of justice to the existence of society, how obvious soever that necessity may appear to be."  The Theory of Moral Sentiments

Policy Institute

Towards a new Enlightenment

The Policy Institute is an independent body committed to researching how principles of market economics, property rights, the rule of law and limited government can be applied to modern Scotland. Its focus is on a broad range of current issues including the economy, public services, the environment and the governance of Scotland. Its main activities are to produce and publish high quality but accessible research and to hold various events as a forum for debate. Its ambition is no less than to recreate enthusiasm for the liberal principles of the Scottish Enlightenment and thus put Scotland back at the forefront of the world both economically and socially. As an educational charity, the Policy Institute is independent of any political party or commercial interest.

The Adam Smith Society (Italy)

"The uniform, constant and uninterrupted effort of every man to better his
condition, the principle from which public and national, as well as private
opulence is originally derived, is frequently powerful enough to maintain
the natural progress of things toward improvement, spite both of the
extravagance of government, and of the greatest errors of administration"

Our objectives The Adam Smith Society is a group of economists, lawyers,
academics and other professionals dedicated to the diffusion of free market
ideas and competitive market - led economics. It is a non - profit
organisation, funded entirely through subscriptions and sponsorships of the
events it organises. Our aim is to become a point of reference for people
interested in our ideas in Italy, and to this end we maintain close links
with the major free market organisations around the world, and especially
with the Institute of Economic Affairs of London. Our main area of interest
is the regulation of economic activity in all its aspects, from antitrust
policies to financial markets regulation. We are also interested in the
related topics of privatisation and deregulation of publicity - owned
economic activities (from public utilities, to municipality - owned
companies, to prisons). We are also obviously interested in the analysis and
debate of the main stream of classical liberal thinking. The means used to
pursue these goals are various, from the organisation of conferences,
seminars and lectures, to the publication of research.
